Hello Darin!

In a message written on Sunday June 09 1996 at 12:19, Darin McBride remarks
to Paul Sidorsky:

DM> IDE: it seems to me that there is a freeware IDE available for EMX. Sure,
DM> it isn't part of the base package, but for the price, it can't be beat.
 DM> :-)

True, but I prefer an IDE that I don't have to configure to run the
compiler and stuff. If I'm going to do that then I may as well use
makefiles. :-)

DM> However, EMX was made to model the unix environment, and for that you
DM> use makefiles. Much easier on memory and diskspace that way. And
 DM> faster. :-}

For DOS I'll agree, but for OS/2 and Windows it's generally easier to use
an IDE. Maybe in OS/2 text-mode that's not so bad but if I'm doing PM
programs all that session changing can be slow (especially with my video
card...)

DM> Debugger: gdb comes with EMX. Not the best debugger in the world, but...
 DM> it exists.

Okay, I thought so.

DM> Which is fair, and wasn't quite what I got out of your original message.

My apologies for that.

DM> It is no more applicable to certain jobs than other compilers might be.

But then the trick is to get the compiler that's suited for the MOST jobs. :-)

DM> EMX is great for the el-cheapo who wants to taste native OS/2
DM> programming without shelling out the big bucks.

Agreed here. That's what I used EMX for.

DM> It's great for porting unix programs. But for other jobs
DM> it isn't as good... just use the tool required.

Bingo. If you can afford it. :-)
