<< Is the rumor true that you won one million from WordPerfect in their macro
contest? >>
Don't I wish! Here's the story and please feel free to post it to any
interested parties so we can dispel this rumor properly.
When Corel bought WordPerfect from Novell, they recognized that they needed a
big marketing push so they created the "First Annual Million Dollar
WordPerfect World Contest." There were 10 categories in which a person could
enter. You had to have developed your entry using one WPCorp's products, of
course.
I sent in several entries including, naturally, some macros. However, the
category in which I won was Presentations! Some other chap, a LEFTenant
commander in the Canadian armed forces won in the macro category with (if you
can believe it) a business card creating macro. I think the clincher was that
he'd got the damn thing institutionalized for all central Canadian government
and saved them beaucoup bucks.
One grand prize winner was selected for each category from all the entries
worldwide. The prize was "a package valued at 20,000." Basically, they flew
me and my girlfriend to Salt Lake for a big black-tie gala, very much like
the Academy Awards, in fact. They gave us a grand in spending money, a
multimedia computer system (CPU, monitor, speakers, inkjet, photo printer,
scanner, TV board) and practically every title published by Corel, all on
CD-ROM. So while it wasn't any 1M, it wasn't bad.
I sold the scanner, use the inkjet, have never opened the monitor (still
using my old one) or the photo printer or the extra speakers (using the one's
that came with the CPU), and have only installed a couple of the software
titles, e.g., Suite 7. The rest is stacked up in my bedroom gathering dust.
Whatinhell am I ever gonna do with a 3D cad/cam program or 600 (literally)
CDs of clip art, or a CD creator package when I don't have the hardware to
support it?
Still it was fun, and I'm glad I did it and even more glad that I won - it
was a once in a lifetime thing and a great feeling. They videotaped the gala
and sent us all copies so it's a great little keepsake. They also presented
us with nifty crystalline trophies and, of course, we were wined and dined
pretty well, too! You should see me in a tux!
