Well I finally found something that works perfect for my child, Jeremy.
Jeremy loves the computer, but in particuliar he loves Sim City 2000.
This is a game in which you have to build a city with a mayors house,
parks, train stations, houses, the whole bit. And you must make it
interesting enough to have people move into your houses. He can spend
hours on the game. Well when he misbehaves I take his privledge of getting
on my computer to play it away. Actually, he is not allowed to play on
the computer at all. In order to get the privledge to play again he must
behave. This is working great and has been for a month now. For example
last nite he talked to me very rudely. We made him sit with us in the
computer room and his privledge was taken away. That absolutely bothered
him. After a while he was allowed to get up, but the fact that he saw
his father install a new game also really got to him. He started doing
little things for me, his father, and later asking me if his behavior was
good enough to play tommorrow. I told him he must show me his good behavior
all nite. It worked. He has also apoligized for his behavior. I'm not
necessarily trying to get him to do good things just to soften me up, but
the fact that he worked at behaving himself showed me and also showed himself
that it can be done. What I like about this discipline measure is he had
to sit and think for a while (without me harping on whatever the problem
was, because he knew what it was) and it made him think before he acted.
Something he needs alot of practice at doing. He has been behaving more
than usual this past month as he knows what will happen if he doesn't.
Also, if it happens early in the day, I take the computer away, but later
on I give him a choice on how to get back on that day. He must physcally
work it off. This is because it is too hard for him to stay off of the
computer a real whole day. He never knows when I will give him this option
though, and so he immediately behaves hoping I will offer it to him. If
I don't it still works because he knows he will get on tommorrow.
I have mentioned this to a friend of mine who is also going to try it since
her kid loves computers too. When mentioning the game he really lit up. He
has heard of it and wants it really bad.
Another thing I liked about it is that his brother and sister sit with him
sometimes and they kinda play together with it. Giving suggestions and
tuff.
This seems to be helping them get along better too.
Anyway if any of you guys have a child that really likes computers and games
I suggest you try it. Couldn't hurt. Except than both of you may be in
competition for the computer.
