Word insists that you use the mail merge helper to accomplish this task. Its 
accessable via Tools\Mail Merge.
An alternative is to use a table on the page.  Layout the table to match the 
spacing of the labels on your sheet.  Then you can type into each cell of the 
table for each of your labels.  Avery labels typically come with instructions 
on the exact settings in a word table for their labels.
