Hello Sandra,
>BP>Hey Sandra, are you collecting maple syrup? I have seen it at the super
>BP>market, but never had a go at it. Saw a documentary about maple syrup
cut here----
SP> A neighbour, who does things the old fashioned way, has a wood-fired
SP> sugar shack operation. For 2-3 weeks every spring, we see the buckets
SP> on trees all along his fence rows, and smoke puffing out the chimney
SP> of his shack.
Now that was really interesting, I can imagine you out there doing all
the collecting of the sap. All them sort of jobs are pretty hard but
rewarding work.
SP> I haven't done it for a while - did it mainly to show the kids how.
SP> Won't this year - haven't the energy nor desire.
How are the kids taken to it? Not too many like the hard outdoor work
that is associated with this kind of activity.
>BP>Ours lasts as long, but other sources come on line which are more
>BP>productive. Mostly from different eucalyptus trees. When they start
>BP>blooming there is so much nectar produced that the bees cant possibly
>BP>collect it all. But then there are a many native birds and marsupials
>BP>that are also drinkers of nectar and eaters of pollen....>
SP> Syrup-sucking marsupials we are short of. But bees, wasps, and other
SP> assorted sippers are busy in the flowers...if the neighbors'
SP> pesticides don't wipe them all out.
yea, that is the problem...know all about it when I had my bees and the
farmer asked me to place them to pollinate his passion fruit and then he
sprayed early in the morning, without telling me, the fool....
>BP>Do you like it as much as maple syrup?...I love honey too. but I try to
SP> I eat neither at present, but ate far more honey than maple syrup.
SP> (It's an expensive treat even where it's made!) But my trigylcerides
SP> practically gave my doctors a heart attack; so, for now, discretion is
SP> the better part of valor. Or something.
it's always something if it's not the cholesterol it's the triglycerides
or something else.....it's just dangerous to be alive..hehehe
>BP>keep it of my hips...and convert it into energy...mostly riding my bike
>BP>and walking...but I also like pan cakes....with honey..a dangerous
>BP>combination for the spare tyre around the hips....:))))
SP> Yeah. I'm doing the stationary bike thing - never could before
SP> because of an uncomfortable seat. Got a better one now (we both do!
SP> :-)) It's starting to show results.
we used to have one of them exercise bikes, wore it out eventually. My wife
was sitting on it listening to her favourite Scottish melodies and putting
up the miles...:))
>BP>I take it, you live somewhere in southern Canada...is that correct?
SP> Yep, southern Southern Ontario, to be exact, in between Lake Erie and
SP> Lake Ontario. There are only a few spots in all of Canada that are
SP> warmer in winter, sw of here, the Okanagan Valley in BC (as well as
SP> the southernmost coast of BC, and a couple places on the East Coast.
Well, this year they are complaining about that theory over there in
BC and the Okanagan Valley....:) We have visited both them places a
couple of years ago. Now we are planing another visit to the US and
Canada. We are going as far north as we can and then across Canada and
try to find a way down towards the Appalachian's without having to
get entangles in to many big cities..... a difficult task...
Spring is on its way now and the first snow drops should be peaking
out in the warmer protected spots.
Nice talking to you........Bill :)
