Hello Maurice -

CA>> I saw the Cadillac version of this when it was first
CA>> introduced at an auto show and it appeared to be a 'no
CA>> brainer' to me?

MK> And if it tells you to make a right turn where obviously
MK> there isn't a right turn are you going to make that turn? A
MK> 'no brainer' might. I've seen people do sillier things in a
MK> car.

Might be a good way for yuppies to find out if they _really_
own a "sport UTILITY vehicle" or not. :-)

MK> Also consider that cellphones are already cited as a big
MK> distraction to drivers what do you suppose a fancy map is
MK> going to do?

I think the radio/DVD players still rank highest in causes of
driver inattention caused accidents.

MK> Mind you I've seen, and sheepishly admit to doing in the
MK> past, maps unfolded by drivers trying to figure out where
MK> the heck they are and where they are going, which takes the
MK> attention away from what should be the top priority at that
MK> moment.

Wife did that on a trip to Wisconsin and we got pulled over by
the state police. :-\

MK> Seeing I cannot afford a Cadillac, not entirely sure I'd
MK> buy one if I could afford it, I think I'll be keeping an
MK> eye open if I encounter on of these sharing the road. ;-)

Mercedes has something similar I think?

MK> Overall I like the idea of GPS, moving maps thingies
MK> despite what I say above. I am not sure which would be a
MK> greater threat to safety, an unfolded map or a digital
MK> display. Someone who understands basic navigation skills in
MK> the passenger seat might come in handy.

I've thought more of these things should be turned to face the
passenger side of the vehicle with just a 'scan' button for the
radio mounted on the steering wheel. I think one American car I
was in not long ago does have radio controls on the steering
wheel 'spokes'?
