I read this book too. It is an excellent book for beginning PM
programming. It explains most of what you have been asking. Its also
easier to understand EDM after you've read the book. :-)

Printing text to the client window is not as easy as calling printf().
I am still learning how to do this correctly.
Look in \emx\samples and \emx\test for some example code.
Also get PFAQ34.ZIP, the OS/2 Programmer's FAQ. I know Mike Bilow has
it, and its probably on many OS/2 BBSes. Its full of tips 'n tricks.
