Assuming the rest of the handshake worked and Zmodem actually got started,
and you didn't mind the "millions" (obvious exaggeration) of
retries that may result. I have faith in Zmodem, but not *that* much
faith.

Bill's calls are not local, and it's Bill who was getting the non-EC
connect, yes? If you're transferring something with plenty of Zmodem
retries (even just a "small" file of around 30-50Kb), that 30
second figure will quickly become 5 minutes or more.
