I don't know if you're doing it "right" or not, but it sounds like it.
A hint - if you have an oven with a light in it, you could spread the slices
on newspaper that is spread on the oven shelves, close the door and leave the
light on. This would be similar to using a dehydrator.
Check every 3-4 hrs to see how things are progressing, since you would be
starting this in the middle of the process.
I was watching something on HGTV, Willard's Almanac I think. They said when
the orange slices are dry to be sure and seal them.
I've done flowers including carnations and roses like this.
