Hello Roy -

CA>> That Linux business/gov users here in the US and other
CA>> countries aren't using the command line text-only
CA>> interface.

RJT> Ok. I use it sometimes, and I use the GUI sometimes...
RJT> Depends on what I wanna do.

I've done graphics from the CLI using DOS years ago and it can
be done but 'shooting blind' can waste a lot of time when you
finally 'view' the graphic and see that WYSINWYW "What you see
is not what you wanted".

CA>>> Since that time mini-installs of SlackWare v7.1 and even
CA>>> v8.1 have been created with the proper how-tos to make it
CA>>> work.

RJT>> Can you point me toward any sites with those? I'm
RJT>> interestd in mini-installs for a few specialized
RJT>> functions, like the print server I'm thinking of for one
RJT>> example.

CA>> Sure, http://www.undercoverdesign.com/dosghost/

RJT> Thought about that after I'd posted it, and put it in the
RJT> bookmarks file, but I didn't get to it today, there were
RJT> too many other things going on...

RJT> I'll get there yet.

The website should still be there for awhile.

RJT>> Just looking at my recent Slackware installs, for
RJT>> example, it appears to put the whole directory structure
RJT>> into place all at once. So even if I didn't install a lot
RJT>> of stuff the directories for them were still there. This
RJT>> was one of the things I went around ripping out. I have
RJT>> no need for X on a firewall, for one example. No PCMCIA
RJT>> hardware, either.

CA>> Removing empty/unwanted directories after an install isn't
CA>> going to make much of a difference in the size of the
CA>> install and has no effect on the amount of memory required
CA>> to use it.

RJT> Not just the directories, though. There was PCMCIA stuff
RJT> installed. There was stuff installed under a bunch of
RJT> directories that supported _many_ other languages, none of
RJT> which I needed and most of which I removed.

OK, that makes more sense to me.

RJT> A better setup package would put in *only* the ones you
RJT> wanted.

Sort of. I was thinking about what you had said about the
install creating all those directories and subdirectories and
it occurred to me that if it did not do that then it might be
possible to put files in wrong-named directories that other
binaries might then not be able to locate when they were
needed. It really does make sense when you think of it that way
to put all common named directories onto the drive before the
user can get too 'creative' and make a mess of it. ;-)

RJT>> I don't think I'd care to even generalize about the
RJT>> people running linux to that extent. It's not like
RJT>> they're all one homogenous groups or anything like that...

CA>> Seems Linux users are more than willing to generalize
CA>> about Windows users all being "in one box".

RJT> That's a little bit different, though.

Only because you're not claiming to be a Windows user.

CA>> Linux has begun to feel like "the other Windows" to me.
CA>> W2K will execute on the minimum hardware required for a
CA>> current RedHat install and without the need to hop around
CA>> making 'adjustments' to the install. The fact that 'script
CA>> kiddies' don't target Linux for vandalism will change if
CA>> it shares desktops long enough with Microsoft.

RJT> That could be, but I don't think they'll find it as easy a
RJT> target.

According to long-time UNIX people there is no inherent
protection for *nix other than the tactics would need to be
different tactics. The FSF server was 'root kitted' not long
ago and some other well known outfit too. Different scenario,
similar results if the intentions were to vandalize the servers.

CA>> Just in case it all gets too very annoying I still have my
CA>> DOS and W31 machine here and can hide there and ignore the
CA>> rest of the world. ;-)

RJT> I haven't found any of those problems surfacing on this
RJT> dos box here either, now that you mention it. :-)

There are advantages to being 'forgotten' sort of like
camouflage. :-)
