-=> Quoting Mark Probert to Lucia Jameson <=-
Mark,
I posted a reply to this (your)message but apparently it got lost in
cyberspace when I moved it from my download directory to the local node on my
bbs. :-*
MP> LUCIA JAMESON was thinking about ADHD Meds & the Military and keyed
MP> into cyberspace:
LJ>This has put my teenager in a bit of a tizzy, as he has his heart set
LJ>on enlisted in the Army and taking advantage of the educational
LJ>benefits after his term of service is over. Short of lying, I don't
LJ>see any way around this. (we do not advocate lying on official
LJ>documents btw :-* )
LJ>I remember that there was a thread going on this a while
LJ>back...wanted to get the "straight poop" out.
MP> Your "poop" is just that, POOP. Do not step in it.
MP> Lots of bogus information is floated around about ADHD. As I spent a
MP> few years in olive drab, and, as I was certain that there were several
MP> people who had some form of emotional, etc. condition, I decided to
MP> check out what the real scoop is.
I got a message in this forum from Jerry Schwartz indicating that he got
different info from his local recruiter than we got from ours.
MP> Also, a colleague of my wife has a son who is bi-polar, went off meds
MP> one month and was in Marine boot camp the next.
MP> After some checking, I found "Attention Deficit Disorder and the Law:
MP> A Guide for Advocates," by Peter S. Latham, JD and Patricia H. Latham,
MP> JD; Chapter 10 - The Selective Service Act, pp 88-93. You can get a
MP> copy of this from the ADD WareHouse Catalog at 1-800-223-9273, or from
MP> Hawthorne Educational Services at 1-800-542-1673.
MP> Latham and Latham. They have *pages* on this issue.
MP> Bottom line seems to be that the ADD would have to *seriously*
MP> interfere with the performance of *entry* level military duties AND
MP> could not be adequately corrected by medication.
MP> As for the two articles referenced, both were followed up by letters
MP> to the editor contradicting them. This fairy tale has floated around
MP> the internet for a few years.
Well, the Dayton Daily Fishwrap...I mean News didn't have a followup, so I
was unaware of contraditing info.
MP> Also, I personally know of one young man who was inducted into the
MP> Marines with a full disclosure of his medical history.
I have told my son to tell them whatever they need to know about his medical
history. I would rather fight the results than have him give false
information on an official military document.
MP> One of the people who reads this conference is in the military.
MP> Perhaps he would care to check with personnel for an official version.
