ARE CLINTON'S PROPOSED STANDARDS _FEASIBLE_?
Some natural questions regarding Bill Clinton's State of the Union ideas:
1) If every kid is tested in math in 8th grade, what happens to those
failing?
These kids will need to learn 8 years of math _plus_ any HS math
in their remaining four years of school, and most of them will be
poorly-motivated.
2) College scholarships for anyone with "B" average?
Will this just guarantee that no HS teacher gives any lower grade
and intensify grade inflation, when few college-bound kids get
low grades now?
3) College scholarships for "B" average?
Will tuition just be raised $1,500 by the typical college,
taking advantage of the $1,500 scholarship?
4) Can the standards improve education?
Arkansas had Clinton for 12 years as governor, and he pushed
statewide standards there. Did it improve outcomes there
(as measured by standardized test scores)?
