From: "Frank Haber" >Why did your client give up? I'm not quite sure. As I understand it, this db was an already-indexed ?MySQL thing. Databases are not my thing. A programmer just wanted to play with the file format and see what he could make of it. I don't know what Windows tools he had at his disposal there - the client's stuff is all runtime on his machines. Expanding the Gzip yielded 1.8G of files, in hundreds of subdirs. Four hours to extract the archive was tolerable. Four days of nearly continuous disk activity seemed a bit much for an idle curiosity projects. The machine is a 900MHz PIII, 512k. My primary interest was the MFT expansion. Since you've brought up the index-every-file subsystem.... o I gather it's faster under XP? o I gather there are some enhancements to the filesystem under XP that reduce the impact of these pathological cases? o I'll follow your discussion with Gregg with interest. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
