BH> What kind of business do you have ?
I raise miniature horses (Arabian type). I'm going to try to sell
out this year though because of no help and health problems with my husband.
Just can't keep up with it all any more. I'm down to 3 mares, a 29" stallion
and two yearling fillies
BH> How long do they live? How long breedable, how long ridable? I am
BH> wanting to learn more about horses as one day we might add one to the
BH> menagerie.
Horses can live to 30yr. - a few longer. Stallions will breed til
the end if they are well cared for. Mares breed into the 20's. Riding
depends on what kind of riding you are doing and care of the horse and if
they've had any lameness problems.
Rimage has foundered 4 times due to the fact she is allergic to wasp or
hornet stings and each time she's gotten stung it's caused it. She was still
riding sound though until about 5 yrs. ago when she had a mast cell tumor
come up on the front leg. No
one around here would touch it and I guess it's a good thing. When she went
lame, we took her to Gainesville and they said it would take about hour of
surgery and 3-4 days and she could go home. So we made arangements to stay
with friends. When they
got in there it was much more involved that they expected and too almost 4
hrs. of surgery. We came home and got her 10 days later and they didn't want
to let her go for 3 wks. more weeks. I told them unless they'd found someone
else to pay the bill, I
was coming after her - that I had a stall and a vet to change bandages. She
did fine and was probably sound for a few years, but I had serious problems
with my back and couldn't ride. When I got to where I could ride, they tumor
had come back on the
inside of the same leg. So she's been unsound since then, but she's family;
so she is retired. Thought several times I'd lose her, but always managed to
get better. My black Arab stallion will be 20yr. in July. He's doing real
good and as gorgeous as
ever.
BH> Do you have minis and normal sized horses? Do you have to keep them
BH> seperate?
Yes, but I DO keep them separated. Rimage used to run with them when
I first had them, but I don't run them together now that I have 5 acres.
They are on separate sides of the fence. All are stalled at night and in bad
weather. Some horses
totally freak at ponies or miniatures; some don't. It's not worth the risk
to find out though.
Don't forget to send me info about the breeder/broker who
BH> had the Lesser male for resale. (where you got your sun). Thanks!
BH> Barbara
Had lost the number, but finally managed to find it in another add -
it's (904)722-0855. That lesser was a real trip and I just loved him. He's
in beautiful plumage too. His name is Tiki.
