True, but my speakers sure can... and generally, distortion isn't too good 
for them when you're cranking them up...

Actually, speakers don't mind distortion at all.  The amp may be
distorting, but the speaker doesn't know that.  It's just getting
current.
What the speaker doesn't want is the current that's just on the
other side of that distortion, which , for the amp, is a clipped
signal to the point that it sends out DC current to the speaker.
That's what melts voice coils.
(When the amp is playing cleanly, the amp is sending AC current to
the speakers.)

Depends.  If you have the speakers running off the amp, then the amp built 
into the head unit isn't doing squat.
