Hi Fr Davis!
FD> This must be the place where I can find sources of genealogical
FD> information, since it's full of inquiring minds. I'm just getting
FD> started on the subject, and on feeling my way around the various nets,
FD> to formulate a plan to research my family history.
Others will surely tell you that there is an excellent geneology echo
on FidoNet which is certainly true. ...ask your sysop if he'd be willing
to pull in the conference with the "tag" GENEOLOGY if you don't find it
available anywhere locally. ...likely someone in your area has it
already - we're not talking about any extra expense here.
...as an aside, aand more in keeping with the academia focus of the
EDUCATOR Echo, there's a conference that's *not* on the backbone (to my
awareness anyway) that is highly educational and deals deeply with
geneology as it relates to the great migration of families who happened
to use the Oregon Trail coming out West. ...the folks on GENEOLOGY
should be able to point you toward it. If your interests lay heavilly
in this area it'd be worth it to you to set up your own BBS to import
this conference; I believe it originates from Portland. ...whichever,
you or your sysop importing it, you be inquiring about an echo with
the id "tag" of (something like) OREGON_TRAIL to learn of systems
carying it who are viable for you to hook up to.
Good luck in your quest -- and have fun! I just got a note across
the internet from some second cousins asking if I was family.
You mentioned other nets. ...on FidoNet you often get a "roll up
your shirtsleeves" assist where someone will do a bit of hall of
records digging for you. ...most of "Oregon Trail" deals with results
of searches like that; newspaper clippings, hall of records entries,
etc. ...the history is wonderful!
Best,
-frank:)
