> SB> just because you know or like an Indian doesn't necessarily make you a

Uh, huh.
RA>Right. Nor does an interest in learning about Indian people, their
>history, the history of Indian-non-Indian relations, issues currently
>faced by Indian people, or, for that matter, going to a pow-wow and
>buying artwork produced by an Indian artist.
(nodding vigorously)
SB> People who are simply interested in Indian things are sometimes
SB> threatened by all the wanabi talk, when they really are happy with
SB> being who they are.
(contented smile and sigh)
RA> I suspect they are afraid that if they show their interest, they'll be
RA> labelled as wanabis.
Speaking for myself (and I always do), I'm afraid of foot in mouth
disease. :/ What I really, really wannabe, is a decent human being.
RA> The d.c. is 'great' at labelling people based on
RA> superficial appearances and quick judgments, and this is probably the
RA> only experience they have of how things are done.
errr.... d.c.?
SB> Hey, I'm interested in folk tales from all over
SB> the entire world, but I really am OK not being a descendent of a
SB> Spanish princess.
And I'm happy with how and who I am. I'm not a fanatic for searching
the family tree and whether I descend from kings or criminals doesn't
change the *me* of me. I learned the term "Cherokee princess" (g) from
Sondra when I (by way of introduction) told her I didn't have a drop
of n.a. blood and didn't collect things n.a., but was just interested
in learning more.
I agree, just being interested in knowing about something doesn't
make you a wannabe.
