The message from Mike Mccartney rises higher:
MM> Hi All,
MM> Well after semi lurking here for a while now I finally decided
MM> to pick up a disc of on of the most frequently discussed groups in this
MM> echo. I talked to some people and I bought King Crimson's "In the
MM> Court of the Crimson King". To be honest it took me a while to get
MM> into but I do like it now.
It's one of my favorite albums. It's hard to top the title track for
absolute emotion. Incredible.
MM> Are all the KC discs similar to this style
MM> or does their style change from disc to disc etc. What other ones
MM> would you guys/gals recommend etc.
Crimson had about 5 or 6 stages and they're still going. My favorite
Crimson album is _Red_ from 1974. This would've been they're third
style, a more in-your-face kind of thing. This is the stage that
influenced Anekdoten so much. Also from this period is _Larks' Tongues
In Aspic_ which is every bit as good as _Red_. It's slightly less
intense, but it's more typically Prog (lots of parts and themes) but it
has an overall more cohesive feel than _Red_. Both are must-buys, in my
and most others' opinions.
After this, the recommendations vary widely. I like _Islands_ quite a
bit, but many of the songs on it have sort of, shall we say, embarrasing
lyrics about sex and stuff -- a real male-oriented work. The last song,
the title track, is absolutely gorgeous, however, and is one of my
favorites of theirs. I heard _Starless And Bible Black_ for the first
time a few months ago and REALLY liked it, but I still haven't picked it
up yet 'cause the CD is always over $15! I'm not going to pay that much
for a domestic CD.
Get _Red_ and _Larks' Tongues in Aspic_ for now.
