JC> TM.RES is fine. However, usually a TM.Vnn file has an incorrect size.
JC> Here's my latest SCANDISK.LOG
JC> Directory entry C:\COM\TELEMATE\TM.VM5 had an incorrect size.
JC> ScanDisk successfully corrected the directory entry.
The TM.VM and TM.SWP files (and their number-incremented friends) are
virtual memory disk swap files created by Telemate when it runs out of
available RAM memory. Telemate normally deletes them apon exit, but if you
close Telemate incorrectly, they will be left on disk. As long as you exit
Telemate completely first, they can be deleted. To prevent them from hanging
around, make sure you exit Telemate with the [Alt-X] exit command (ie, "This
will end your Telemate session"). Do not turn off the computer or close the
DOS window before doing this.
ScanDisk/CHKDSK will only tell you if the file is stored incorrectly on
the disk by DOS. They will *not* tell you if the file has had it's
contents modified. So TM.RES may be damaged even if ScanDisk reports no
error on the file itself. You should still try reinstalling Telemate (just
make sure you backup any data files (TM.CFG, TM.FON, etc) before doing so).
How much free conventional memory do you have? How much free XMS memory?
How much free disk space? It is possible you are having some sort of wierd
out-of-memory error. I don't really know much about how Telemate works
internally (only Winfred would), but it sounds like that might be it.
You can also try running a recent version of a virus scanner. The MSAV
program included with MS-DOS is out-of-date, so I wouldn't recommend
trusting that one alone. Personally, I find McAfee's VirusScan to be very
comprehensive. It is shareware and available off of most BBSes. There are
also Windows, Win95, WinNT, and OS/2 versions available.
