You can probably get good references to links for that
information from the audio groups on usenet. There are quite a
few professionals within those groups (active pros).

One of the reasons I question the logic of going to Slack v9
(the bloat).

If I remember correctly your sound card wasn't working then.

Another reason to stay with one distribution for awhile. :-) 

I found a guy on IRC who had stayed with what he had originally
installed (Slack v3.x?) and had managed to get ALL of it
working with sound/graphics/networking and had used all of it
and could reconfig any/all of it anytime he wanted to. He was
the guy who first mentioned TIMIDITY to me. :-)

Hard to do when you know they have families depending on them.
In my case my ambition was the cause of their unemployment when
they could not keep up. Not that the owner necessarilly wanted
to let them go but that they didn't cope well with being made
to look bad and at that point it was me or them. It was my
intent that it would always be them.

When I can't read things I hand them to my mother or stepfather
and ask them to read it for me out loud. Not quite the way it
was when I was a kid and not what I had expected from life at
all.
