Yes.. having *something* live to hear when in a dead-zone is  
good.  I haven't tested the battery life when using radio.

The PGP that I was referring to is for encypted email.

For encrypted voice comms, I've heard that Signal is a good  
choice. Telegram also boasts secure calls:

What model of the BB was it?  I'm curious.  If it only supported  
either 2G or HSPA+ max, then it is not worth it - even the range  
for phone calls will be less than what you can get with LTE.

Even my BB's LTE may not be all that it seems, according to this  
article:

   ..and I can believe it. The best I am getting right now is  
barely 2.7Mbps.  That's just in the low 3G range!  ..and the  
phone is telling me it is connected with LTE.   But it is much  
better than the HSPA+ that I was getting with a previous USB  
dongle for mobile.
