Reading all your comments it happens to come into my mind that your suggested  
solution would only work with DOS based machines if the mentioned Programs  
exist under DOS too.

There certainly is a REXX version for Dos and SED (at least a light version)  
exist on that platform too. But how about Emacs?

I use for editing in all environments I run (except Unix) an commercial  
Editor calles KEDIT. (Though you into JCL you might have worked with VM too,  
where it is called XEDIT).

I'll suggest it as a good choice for working under 4dos.
