When I left Dos (version 5 or so) command.com was not capable of
redirecting stderr, but 4dos could. My systems run on protectonly=yes for
more than two years now, perhaps something has changed with msdos6, novell7
or pcdos7. I don't know and I'm not interested, either :-)
