I think standard is faster, and I am certain it is easier... have you tried
coding for EGA 320x200x16?  Weird thing is, 16-color modes are usually SLOWER
than 256-color modes.
The standard should be faster, since you only need to calculate position and
put a pixel there (or use REP MOVSW for horizontal lines and filled
rectangles), whereas in ModeX you would have to determine which page to write
the pixel to.  Look at VGAKIT for an example of how to do ModeX.
