I would recommend using the free driver xf86sup.sys by Holger Veit, which
implements a method the concepts of which he has described in an EDMI
article. The method used in the driver is still a bit faster than that, and
it's available in source, with ready-to-use interface to C.

There is awful much overhead using testcfg, since it goes through a lot of
APIs checking parameters etc., and calling a segment with IOPL also needs a
lot of cycles to reload registers, check privileges etc.
