Did 99% of my own TW> for over 45 years. I used NGK's pretty much exclusively, they're standard on most all Japanese motorcycles I've ever had. I was always happy with them. I used to keep a brass wire brush in my tool kit to clean them off on occassion. I noted some plugs wore and rounded their electrodes more often than others and for the most part I used them in inline four motorcycles. Since they'd come out in fours I used to keep the ones that still had sharp edges on the electrodes and found by selecting these out every 2 - 3 spark plug changes I essentially got a free set. A steel fingernail file I used to remove the pits from a set of points as there's a fair amount of material there to work with. You just have to get it flat with no scrapes or scratches. Lastly run a business card soaked in alcohol through the points after installation to remove all traces of oil from your hands. I got a LOT of mileage out of standard Suzuki tuneup kit this way. The only bike that was really hard on plugs was a Yamaha 1100 XS that was a firebreather and needed to be runout from time to time time to clean it out. Champion supposedly made an exact replacement for the 1100's NGK's but I could only find them at NAPA and their performance and longevity left something to be desired, they were pricey as well. I was going to detune the Yamaha just before a sixteen year old girl with a brand new license put an end to my plans. Rejetting the carbs down a size and going back to stock pipes would have done a lot to make this a more city ridable motorcycle as well as open up a LOT of right hand turn cornering clearance removing that tuned four into one tuned exhast system. Only bike I ever owned with no points and a computer brain. That pretty much dates me ;-) I often say I've never been stranded on a bike but that's not 100 percent true, the bike with the brain would not start two blocks from my apartment one day when the battery voltage fell to a level the computer didn't like :-( Only bike I ever owned that could not be kick or bump started in that situation. I also did ALL my own work on my wheels except for two occassions I was pressed for time and both times the 48 - 56 dollar an hour shop rate mechanics screwed up bigtime. First case when I correctly tuned the bike I had to back off the idle because the bike was idling at 33 hundred RPM! Second time a moron left the pinch bolt off the rear axle and I could have had a full rear wheel lockup on the highway :-( That free tire install with purchase could have killed me. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: FidoTel & QWK on the Web! www.fidotel.com (1:275/311) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 275/311 10/345 106/1 2000 633/267 |
