 >the most powerful deck amps don't put out more than 12-14wpc RMS.... the 25
 >and 30 watt numbers painted on are a joke.
No, they're not a "joke." They may be misleading, however.
They're the peak power readings (usually with headroom). Peak
readings are just as valid as RMS or even peak-to-peak. You simply
need to know the difference between them and what they mean. Peak
power and headroom are definitely important and not a joke. The
average person often fails to recognize the differences and this is
where the misleading part comes in. Many companies take advantage of
this fact and purposely give the peak readings. This usually doesn't
happen with amplifiers designed for the home, which causes the
comparison errors. Although since Power involves two variables
(voltage and current), they can mislead you even further. Not all 100
watt rms amplifiers are equal.

Of course, with the popularity of high-current amplifiers, one
needs to be sure of the impedence load that is being used to
compare the amps, since car amps are now rated at 1/2, 1, 2, and
4 ohm loads now, while home equipment is generally rated at 8 ohms.

Hullo Bonnie,
BG> Like you, I enjoyed the article on Tweeking that Will sent us.

-> I was amused that despite his not taking "system break-in" CD's
-> seriously, he IS a believer in green markers.
BG> Break-in CDs should be taken seriously?? You believe this??!!
Ummm, no I don't, actually. I'm a skeptic by disposition and an
engineer by training, and I try to give those involved in placebo
audiophilia a wide berth. I wish *I'd* thought of selling little
adhesive rubber dots to "absorb vibrations" in capacitors, connectors,
earlobes, whatever.  ;->
BG> While there is some merit in the "theory" of
BG> the green markers reducing specular reflections being reduced, I don't
 BG> buy the total theory.

Reducing unmeasureable reflections from the edge of a disc is going
to give "cleaner" ones and zeroes (and therefore improved sound)?
I think you're being a bit too diplomatic here, Bonnie!
                       ^^^
BG> I "break" in my stuff
BG> with music I'm working on.
I've got _Metal Machine Music_ on LP, which, besides exercising the
electronics has the added advantage of emptying the room of extraneous
personnel.
