Hello Fellow PPSers,
The following is the text of a letter given to me by a physical
therapist who is working on her master's degree under the direction of Dr.
Perry of Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center. Her name is Anna Lladoc and her
thesis involves the study of the effect of low level electrical stimulation
on the muscles of individuals with post-polio syndrome.
Her research will take place in Downey, California and several visits to
the medical center is required. I offered to post her message out in
cyberspace in an attempt to help her find suitable volunteers. The contact
information is posted at the end of the message.

HELLO!
I am a physical therapist working on my Master's thesis at USC. My
research study is being done at Dr. Perry's laboratory (Dr. Perry is one of
my advisors). The study involves the use of electrical stimulation for
individuals with post-polio syndrome. My project title is:
Effects of low level electrical stimulation on muscle strength, muscle
endurance, circulation, and walking in adults with post- polio syndrome.
I am looking for volunteer subjects who have already made changes in
their lifestyles to minimize their symptoms. Volunteer subjects must be
willing to use low intensity electrical stimulation for 6 hours continuously
at night, while sleeping. Each subject will also need to go to Rancho Los
Amigos Medical Center 5 different days to be tested during this 6 month
period. EAch person will have to obtain their own transportation to go to
these tests.
I will be comparing the findings before and after 6 months of using
electrical stimulation. So I would like all the volunteers to have similar
characteristics such as 1) being between the ages of 30 - 70 years old, 2) at
least 20 years since the acute polio episode, and 3) able to walk at least 10
yards (may use walking aids).
If you think you may be interested and/or just want more information,
please contact me at 909-684-0939 (or my pager at 310-409-7957). This does
not, in any way, obligate you to participate in this study; it just allows me
to send you more information so you can make a more informed decision to
volunteer or not volunteer for this study.
     Thank you very much.
                              Sincerely,
                              Signed Anna Lladoc, P. T.
                              lladoc@hsc.usc.edu
