I don't know whether you will find your answer in here, Melissa, since
the majority of educators and others who post in here are from the U.S.
I am a teacher in Ontario but not high school so can't help you either.

Ever thought of asking your High School Math teachers about this?
As for the math exam being worth up to 40% of your passing grade, think
yourself lucky. I graduated from a British school and the exam was the
only basis of your having passed.  :(  So you could do brilliantly all
year but if you fouled up your exam because of nerves, or whatever,
tough luck.... It was nationally set exam too...  :(
