On older systems com1 is typically a 25 pin connector.
leaving the 9-pin com2 for the mouse and serial mice have been coming with
9 pin connectors for about over 10 years now,

my 13 year old mouse it still working (after a few repairs to the cord and
a stint inside a trackball(tm)) and I haven't replaced the 25 pin plug yet
either :)
