I was referring to the specific phone lines into Zero One's BBS, not
to the behavior of the modems. I used to have trouble keeping a connection
going even at V32b. I had no complaints about the 1496+.
Even in the USA, there are regions which are "incompatible" with each other -
not theoretically, but in practice. The area where Zero One (ZyXEL USA) is
located was one which my area had trouble with - regardless of the brand of
modem. Our phone service is generally excellent, but the telcos are so
arrogant that they refuse to admit or even investigate these problems unless
you hold their feet to the fire.
Example: a bank of four phone lines which make ringing sounds when you dial
them but don't ring at the modem (even if you hook a telephone up instead).
They worked the day before. The phone company's response: you need to have
your computers serviced, bring them back to the store where you bought them.
The next morning, they all work again. Message from the phone company: we
couldn't find any problem.
I shudder to think what people go through in parts of the world where the
phone systems are worse.
