The full name should be Stevia Beroudiana Bertoni.
The plant should already be known by the Guarany indians  in Paraguay and 
Brazil since centuries. The Spainish sailors brought it in the 16th century 
to Europe, but only arount 1930, something has been done with that plant.
As this moment in Japan, it is the most used sweetner.
Stevioside should be known in the USA as a diethelp but it is not really 
recognized as a sweetner, which is the same as here in Belgium.
I just got all this information in my diabetic information brochure.
