Unix is an operating system developed 1970. Linux is a modern
powerful variant of Unix.
AM> is linux like a windows for unix???
No. Today there is no only "Unix" (unless you mean the one from 1970).
There are a lot of Unix variants like Linux, FreeBSD, AIX, SunOS,
Digital Unix etc etc..
AM> is unix like dos??? is.. is.. is... aaarrgghhhh!!

Linux is like unix, if you don't know what unix is, in short it is
the operating system the Internet and a lot of servers/workstations
is built on.
AM> rite..

I can see that ;)

Good move.

it to Win3.1 for dos.

Re-Partitioning is a good move, alltough it's not really neccesary.
You could split your Win95 partition into 2 smaller partitions
using "Fips". Fips will come with your Linux distribution.
AM> 1: has a proper GUI that dont crash and looks good!
XFree86 (XWindows)
AM> 2: that will run all the Linux/unix stuff (meaing compatible)
Most of the Unix programs are distributed in source and can be
compiled under Linux. Be aware that most Linux/unix programs are
distributed as source code.
AM> 3: is there such a thing as AOL or Compuserve program for Linux like
ith
AM> windows?..
I have no idea. Possibly. You should get a real ISP anyways..
AM> 4: what linux version/whatever do i need???? which is best??
By a CD kit containing 6 or more CDs with every Unix variant.
This won't cost a lot.. maybe 30$
AM> 5: where do i get it from in the UK!?
Computer stores, bookstores or places like www.cheapbytes.com
If you have a fast Internet connection, you can download the
complete "Linux" for free from the net.
You should start at www.linux.org
AM> 6: how much will it cost me???
Nothing if you download it, the price for the CD only if you by it.
AM> 6: Does linux have a 'dos' type shell?? (no 'p' takers!.. i mean a shell
AM> to
AM> the actulal system command line like with windows/win95/os2..
That's the foundation of it. When you start Linux, you'll get to the
system prompt right away..
AM> 7: internet & Comms!!! what sort of support does it have!!!
EVERYTHING! The intetnet was built on unix. Linux has everything you
are looking for.
AM> 8: Anyone got a list of Commands for the Unix shell with details on what

AM> of
AM> currunt dir. switches .....'
AM> etc
Uhh.. dir = ls del = rm ... Get yourself a Linux book.
There is a dos emulator for linux which means you can run your dos
progs under Linux too..
AM> 9: Programming under Linux.. i do Turbo Pascal 7 programming at the
AM> moment
AM> is there a Pascal for Linux????
Yes.
Whats you should do first is getting a good Linux book at a bookstore.
Beware. The learning curve for Win95 people is VERY steep.
It will feel like you are a complete begginer to computers..
