I don't know. See the model460.zip software package you sent along
for the modem has an executable that installs "USR Winmodem"
support in my dialer, it's not recognized by diagnostics.

I reset my LPT1 off of IRQ 5 so the dialer gets a bit farther
along having no conflicts but haven't actually hooked a phone line up
to it yet.

Until I can move the computer so it's more accessable
to me working on it is very difficult and carries
a high price.

I'm in recovery mode just now.

 OK, will look again.
Wasn't anticipating multiple choices in a file named model460.zip.
I know there's a driver in there for Win 95 but that machine won't be up
 for a bit.

I ran both of the enclosed executables in that Zipfile, one installs
"USR Winmodem" in my dialer and the other DOS based EXE
attempts to set the COM port address and IRQ.
I guess it needs rejumpering to take the program as as is it
just echos to the monitor what it's already set to.
 I did read the docs.
Waiting for a good day to pull the modem and see if I can't make out
the print on the circuit board when well rested.

Did you receive that package yet?
I saved the receipts so insurance would be no problem.

JH> "Negative" on what you think you got for Google hits. Model 460 is
 JH> simply not a Winmodem.

Relax, you've been unbelieveably helpful in tech support, effort
and the incredible deal you gave me.

I was quite happy with just the two items and look upon anything
else as gravy. Just haven't been able to check it all out yet.

I _could_ pull the ethernet card from this Hewlett Packard
as that's in the only ISA slot and slap the modem in there
having Win 98 set it up.

Be pretty neat to be online with a hardware 56k on this system
but I've targeted the 460 for the NEC and just as soon leave well
enough alone with the H.P.

Jim I get tired quickly and when that happens I get impatient
and can make mistakes so I can only check into so much at one time.

About six months ago I was undertaking too much hardware
hacking at one time and blew out the video on a 486 motherboard
as well as the I/O.

I'll look at the file you sent again but it will be a couple of days
before I mess with the modem again.

Heck I haven't even checked out the W.D. drive yet,
I've got to micromanage to effectively use limited productive time.

Think about it Jim, swapping that drive out is just two
connectors and 5 screws 4 for the mounting rails
and I've not yet managed it for the W.D. drive.

You took the effort and did legwork I could never have managed on my
own and your efforts and sweetheart deal is most appreciated
and I remain extremely grateful.

Sorry, what I've read about model 460 on the web and what's in the
zip file you sent along. Well the text makes no mention of this
but one of the included executables installs a "USR Winmodem"
driver. I tried the other USR drivers in the dialer and they failed
 with error messages.

I'll look again for a flash for V90 but the only two executables
I found in that zip file were an executable to setup in
Win 3.1 - 95 and another to set the COM port and IRQ.

I could easily have missed something as until the other
day I was preoccupied with replacing all the software
I lost in a crash on the H.P.
Got everything setup there now better than before.

Maybe I _will_ pull the ethernet card and let 98 detect the
modem just to get resolution on this issue.

I'll have to look and see how difficult this may be
 on the rather tight tower.

JH> But our deal was "satisfaction guaranteed, or your money back", so
JH> unless I hear from you sometime fairly soon that you've had success in

JH> you can just send the pooch back to me.

Geez Jim relax. I'm very extremely with the deal.
Think of my questions as a fishing expedition due the fact I
can only do so much on my own these days.
I wish it were otherwise, there's much I wish I could do that was
once trivial but now difficult if not impossible.

As I said and I intend to keep my word I plan on sending
along a contribution for you to pass along to the next
disadvantaged individual, buy coffee or a pizza, whatever.

Just don't look for the donation to arrive in less than 60 days.

WC> MSD doesn't see the modem in Win 3.1 nor does sysinfo in Norton

WC> I attempt to dial so it's being seen there.

JH> So what are the jumpers set to,

What they arrived at.
Haven't been able to makeout the print on the board yet.
I can see COM but the numbers are TINY.
On the second set of jumpers not one is bridged.
There is one hanging off one pin however.

I'll have to take the card back out and have another look see
but as I say that'll have to wait for a good day.
I slapped the second Seagate in, sys'ed, xcopied, put in the modem
and ran the archived executables in one day and that's
the full boat for me these days.
Perhaps it's set to PnP?

The DOS executable returns COM 3 IRQ 5 when I try to set
it to COM 3 IRQ 4 so I'm thinking the jumper hanging off
one pin may be an NVRAM program enable jumper.

What I'm _not_ going to do is swap jumpers around at random
chancing smoking the modem.

Heck the 486 motherboard I spoke of above
smoked just because a loose jumper jumped off it's pins
and in my haste I did not notice.
Natually about two seconds after the board smoked I saw a loose
jumper on the table and looking found where it had left from in
another ten seconds :-(

JH> and what have you flashed it to?
JH> Aha, I see below that you don't know what it is jumpered to.
JH> The "drivers" I sent are for Win9x. Your Mileage in
Win3.1 may vary,
JH> and I guess it does. The README file indicates that the Windows
JH> version of the flasher software I sent will work under Win3.x, but I
JH> think that won't fix much if the jumpers aren't correctly set to match.

Agreed.
I'll look again and see if there's anything to be found on the web,
problem is there's a lot of conflicting stuff out there
for a model 460 and I'm a more patient man these days, I have to be.

Resources being tight I'm in no hurry to let the smoke out of anything.
BTW is this model 460 a Sportster?
I've no experience with USR and knowing exactly what it is might
help me to find a JPG or GIF image showing the jumper settings.

My priority this month is a large hard drive to clone this one.
My playing with Linux and attendent need for higher speed downloads
takes second seat to data integrity on this machine.

WC> I'm going to see about locating a JPG of the 460 modem so I can find
WC> the jumper to enable the IRQ and port setting program to take

JH> Will putting the modem on IRQ 4 not interfere with whatever you may
 JH> have on COM1?

Not a bit. Had a 14,000 internal voice, data, fax on COM 3 IRQ 4
and an external 28,800 on COM 1 IRQ 4 with no difficulties at all.

JH> Since by email you indicate you want 3 COM ports and 2

Ethernet cards in

JH> Repeating - - on Model 460 I've seen, jumper settings for COM and
JH> IRQ are stencillled in white on back of the card. Maybe they aren't
JH> there on the one you got? If there and you can't read them, try a mag
JH> glass or some reading glasses. (serious, not just poking fun).

JH> I'm expecting another Model 460 to arrive here from that same Ebay
JH> seller tomorrow afternoon. Maybe I'll have time to look at it and do
JH> some testing by TUE or so. I'll let you know.

Don't press it as I'm in no rush at all.

I _was_ a bit intense about it for a time but that's because I
attempted too much at one time and the physical stress
 got too me.

I also frequently express myself poorly when I'm really in
a bad way and if I offended you please accept my aplogy and know
 such was not my intent.

Believe me if I was unhappy about _anything_ you'd know it.
I may be physically disadvantaged these days but not all my
ways have been impacted by this difficulty

OK Here's the magic number to find the modems flash and information.
It's an USR Akita SCM001369-04.
Still no idea how to manually set the jumpers and assume they're set as
PnP though reference materials suggest that it can be manually
jumpered.
Only a single hit on this search on google but several incorrect
hits at USR's seach engine.
