Courier 1/23/96 firmware Release Notes

This new firmware adds two new S registers, S69 and S70. Also added is the

#CID setting. Its important that after the new firmware is flashed, that

these settings be set to 0 and saved to NVRAM. The USR.CFG file included

performs that operation. This can also be done by sending the command

ATS69=0S70=0#CID=0&W to the modem. If these S registers are left

uninitialized, it may cause the modem to work incorrectly.

=============================================================================

NEW FEATURES

The Courier new release addendum documents the following new features in

detail:

1. Caller ID (CLID)

--------------------

Caller ID is NOT supported on daughterboard Courier modems. Only single board

Courier modems support Caller ID. Owners of daughterboard Couriers may

have their modem modified with a hardware change to support caller ID for a

fee of $24.95. Please call Customer Support on 1 800 550 7800 for details.

Both Basic and Extended Caller ID are supported. Basic Caller ID provides

the date and time of the caller and the calling party's telephone number.

Extended Caller ID provides the billing name associated with the calling

party's telephone number in addition to the Basic service information.

Formatted and unformatted presentation formats are supported. Formatted

output presents the Caller ID information as a list of fields and the

values received by the Courier. Unformatted output presents the raw

Caller ID data as a string of hexadecimal characters.

Command summary

#CID=0 Disable Caller ID detection and reporting (default)

#CID=1 Enable Caller ID with formatted output

#CID=2 Enable Caller ID with unformatted output

#CID=3 Enable Caller ID with formatted output and name suppressed

#CID=4 Enable Caller ID, do not transmit the information to the

DTE (computer), but retain it in the Courier's memory. ATI15

will display the Caller ID information

#CID? Display current Caller ID setting

#CID=? Display the Caller ID settings that are available

#$ Display summary of # commands available

I15 Display Caller ID information for last call. Both formatted

                and unformatted output is presented

2. Distinctive Ring

--------------------

Distinctive Ring is sometimes known as MultiRing or RingMaster. It is a

service provided by the local telephone company that permits the assignment

of multiple telephone numbers to one line. Each number is associated with a

different ringing pattern.

The Courier recognizes four ring patterns known as ring A through D.

Command Summary

S70 Bit value Distinctive Ring Recognition

         0 1 RING A

         1 2 RING B

         2 4 RING C

         3 8 RING D

        4-7 Reserved

A setting of S70=0 disables distinctive ring. The Courier will return a

result code of RING for either Ring type A or B. Settings bits 0 through 3

will enable distinctive ring and the Courier will recognize the ring type

selected by the bits which are turned on. The Courier will return a result

code of RING A, RING B, etc.

New Result Codes

RING A 170

RING B 171

RING C 172

RING D 173

3. Plug and Play

-----------------

The Courier modem now supports Plug and Play as defined by the Microsoft

Plug and Play Specification for External COM devices v1.00. To disable Plug

and Play for the external, set S69.0=1. The default is S69.0=0 which enables

Plug and Play for the external Courier modem.

A new Courier ISA bus modem will begin shipping in March 1996. This new

internal Courier (ISA bus) supports Plug and Play, but is shipped configured

for COM2: IRQ 3. To configure the Courier ISA bus modem for Plug and Play,

set the COM jumpers to cover both positions on columns B and C.

4. Carrier Loss Dialback

-------------------------

The Courier can now re-establish lost connections automatically. To enable

this feature, set S44.1=1 (S44=2). When a connection is lost and carrier is

no longer present, the modem will wait the time specified by S44 (seconds)

and then redial the previously dialed number. The Courier will attempt to

reconnect up to 10 times.

=============================================================================

FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS

1. When the modem is configured to reset on DTR drop, it will now send a

V.42 DISC command to the remote modem before disconnecting and resetting.

2. ATI3 changed to output banner "USRobotics Courier V.Everything". ATI3

can still be used to set the modem's clock in the same manner as previous

    firmware.

3. Corrected intermittment failure to send TSI frame in Class 2.0 fax.

4. Corrected ability to use ";" to send multiple commands in fax
mode. ie.

    AT+FCLASS=2.0;+FAA=1 now works.

5. Improved V.25bis to support ">" and ":" dial modifiers.
