First it was road signs, then knobs and buttons on furrn' vee-hickles, now
we cain't get a proper bunch of 'murr'can buttons on our winders. What's
the world coming ter?

Actually, I'm with you. In 1975, my first tee shirt "with writing on
it" held an enlargement of one cartoon from a Euro roadsign parody in
?Mad magazine. There was a large picture of a panda bowing a cello, plus a
"10," with the legend, "Bears playing cellos next 10
km."

In 1970, a Win 3.0 GUI replacement for TREE used a (primitive, 4-bit)
representation of, wait for it, a pine tree for its icon. This puzzled
many of us - "pine" swamped "tree" for most eyes. A
poll was held, and I believe these were the winners:

1. Database of Vermont revolutionary heros. Don't tread on them.

2. Forestry program.

3. Phallic symbol collection, with a icon suitable for a family desktop.
