| subject: | Deal- Modem Woes |
Hello, Wayne. The incoming new Model 0460 didn't arrive today, so more about the jumpers will have to wait a couple days. While we're waiting, I think I can clear up a few things, and hopefully reduce some of the "worry factor." Yes, the modem arrived here jumpered for PnP, and that is the way I sent it. Filename Model460.zip is just a name I made up when I zipped those different files back together to email them to you. No need to google search for that one. [:-D. "Akita" is a name I think unique to MicronPC. I got the files I sent you from http://support.buympc.com/platforms/components.html SCM001369-04 is MicronPC's part number. The Ebay seller I have gotten these from sells a lot of liquidations from MicronPC. That SMC number would normally have been on a white sticker attached to the modem by MicronPC. I think the modem I sent you was missing that. I think not much benefit to a whole lot more searching at USR/3Com website. BIR when I looked there, the "Product ID" was one for a "OEM Modem", and if there were any drivers there for it, it would be a larger *.INF file, with a bunch more driver choices on it. In any event, I don't think you'll be finding any "freebie" programs at that website for flashing it from X2 to V.90. In case you haven't noticed yet, the USR/3COM website SUX! Very difficult to find what you need. WC> Just so and yes I searched both the web and the USR web site. WC> I need to got back and look for a modem ID program Jim WC> mentioned but the one I've got here isn't DOS 16 bit compliant. The MODEMID.EXE program I have is a Windows program. That's that 1.3MB program we were talking about. I thought I had also sent that as an email attach. WC> From what I saw the attached model460.zip file did not contain WC> a flash upgrade. . . .. You seem to have several misconceptions about the content and function of the files I sent. I think a careful re-reading of the README file will clear most of them up - - - **************************************************** V.90 Upgrade files for Micron Data/Fax X2 Modems ================================================ These files are provided from 3Com to Micron for distribution to Micron customers. The Flash utilities are a Free upgrade to the Micron Data/Fax X2 modems bundled with the Micron systems. The Flash utilities will only work with the Micron Data/Fax modems already supporting X2 56k technology. Contents of ZIP: W-AKITA.EXE Windows V.90 Flash utility D-AKITA.EXE Dos V.90 Flash utility MDM3COM.INF New V.90 updated INF file (windows95 driver) README.TXT This file ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To use the W-AKITA.EXE file you must be in Windows 3.X, or Windows95. Just run the program from a window, or the Start/Run menu in windows95. ------------ To use the D-AKITA.EXE file you must be in Dos. When you run the file it will give you a list of / switches for com port, irq, etc. /B=s DTE Port speed. default is 115200. 57600 is recommended. /C=p Port number to use. /I=q IRQ level to use. Default is standard IRQ mapping. /O=b I/O Base address [in HEX]. Default is standard base address mapping. /F=l Set FIFO threshold levels for 16550 UART. Default is 8 bytes. Dos command line Example: D-AKITA /B=57600 /C=3 /I=5 This will flash the modem on COM3, IRQ5 at 57600. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- After you have flashed the modem it will be detected in windows95 as a different modem, and windows95 will prompt you to provide the driver. That driver is the MDM3COM.INF file provided with the Flash files. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ********************************** WC> The HTML file mostly pertains to installation on WC> a PnP 9X setup. Yes, it is the Win9x Installation Guide available there for download. It refers to a utilities diskette which neither of us has. WC> Got exactly one hit on google for a USR Akita SCM001369-04 Those search words are from what I sent, and the Google search returns a link to what I sent. Circular. FWIW, the seller's supply of this particular model seems about dried up. I've only seen about 2 listed in the past month, and I bought both of those. You got the first of these, and the 2nd is still en-route to me here. Earlier, I had bought a good number of them for where I volunteer, and our director has flashed them all with the software package I sent to you. Too bad they're about all gone. It isn't common knowledge that the V.90 flash software is available at MicronPC, and I was able to get many of those for a minimum bid of $1 each. - - - JimH. ...
