even if you don't know what this statement do, another tip: the VACPP
package contains a VERY powerfull debugger. (ipmd). just compile your
source with debug information and run it in the debugger. look at the value
of state and of *state.

now the solution: 
*state++ '==' *(state++)

if you want (and you want it) different, you should write:

  (*state)++;

then you code runs ok. (you have to change it twice!)

PS: here's how i compiled your code for debug info:
