I'm not sure where the Samoan Islands are (never was big on DX) but I'd say 
that most of that travel was via open water.
Ground tends to "absorb" some of the RF energy on each hop.

You could possibly hear all kinds of activity there in the "AM Window", 
between 3870 and 3890 emminating from the Northeast.  And, is sure sounds 
like there's going to be LOTS of activiy on this winter around here!
talked to a guy last night about a Solid State, Directly Coupled, descrete 
component audio amplifier.
Going to try to find found 811's in push-pull, parallel (sorry - sweep tubes 
wouldn't work) and take the audio from the output of a speech amp, via a pair 
of DC blocking caps directly from the plates on the output of the speechamp, 
to a hi-Z choke, then the bases of the little transistors.
I';ll tell more about this later.
