subject: Floppy and smoke.

How are you today Jim ?

JH> I'm still way behind in responding here, but I'm jumping ahead to this
 JH> one.

You are not alone, do not feel bad.
  On the dead floppy:

 JH> My guesses - -
JH> 1) The Ghost is actually a naughty poltergeist, and haunted the
 JH> drive.
JH> 2) It was time for the FDD to die of old age, and a mere
 JH> coincidence.
JH> 3) Ribbon cable hooked up wrong
JH> 4) I smoked a HDD board one time while trying to plug in the power
JH> while "hot" - -- it was one of those drives with the power conn.
 JH> upside down.

Hee ! I will agree with 2). I was trying to get Ghost working
but at the dreaded moment of floppy dismissal, a KR637 driver
        disk was in the drive.

JH> so if you're happy, so am I.

  Birds of a feather.

JH> I have several interpretations of the frontpanel pinouts by now - -
JH> The one you emailed doesn't have the correct number of pins.

The one that I posted here is what I see on the board and they work
fine as posted, Jim. I had four leads to connect and the now are
connected. Believe me, my I/O header only sports 8 wires.

JH> When are you shipping the system to your nephew? Maybe I'll have more
JH> time for checking those pinouts by then.

Not for another 3 weeks. Going back via Quebec City to Kamouraska
  again.

JH> But whatever, it is hard to argue with success, and if the pwr and
JH> reset switches work correctly, and the pwr and HDD leds work right,
JH> I think that should be about close enough.

I will have to play a little more with the ON LED. It ought to be
green but is amber. You mentioned a two colour LED for different
functions. Maybe this connector is off by one pin ???

JH> One thing - - I think I sent the mainboard with the Pwr switch set to
JH> instant off instead of 4 second delay. With the 4 second delay
JH> active, you punch the pwr button once and it goes into suspend mode.
JH> You have to hold it in for at least 4 seconds before it powers down
JH> normally. If it is set for 4 second delay, I think a bi-color LED is
JH> needed for the power indicator, as that (pretty much worthless) manual
JH> from MicronPC says that the power LED will change colors to Orange or
JH> RED when it goes into suspend mode.

That is what I need to look into, the two colour LED. But the fact
that the BIOS can be set one way or another is no matter here as I
always do the Windows "Shut Down" routine. It dies in 4 seconds.

JH> and unless a "real" version of the pinouts shows
JH> up, that one will be hard to figure out.

Let me wish you all the luck in the world. Seeking this out of date
  information is a real crusade.
