All codepages in Windows system contain the basic English alphabet in the
same code positions, so any character A-Z a-z 0-1 will not be affected
regardless of what language your system is set to - so that's not it. Even
the multibyte character sets (Chinese and such) contain the English
character set, so you can always use an English keyboard. Pack one when
traveling in Far East ;-)

I don't have any ideas as to what might be the original problem, but
definately wouldn't rule out a virus.
