Yes, We just have to make users have a reason to visit one another's bbs's.
Specialisation is a good thing. 

I am trying to find some of the doors that captivated me back in the mid 90s
like Yankees and Rednecks and placing them on my system.

And customization is great too. But having the time to radically make your
system your unique place is another good point.
