I'm not quite sure if it works properly, as I have not tested this utility,
but TVFS (Toronto Virtual File system) does this job: it assign directorynames 
instead of driveletters.

On the other hand, as you rightly put, the Nakamichi MJ-5.16 is a fiver and 5
driveletters are properly assigned on boot. So, if Jean-M gets 18 of them,
there must be something awfully wrong on his system.

Jean--Michel, do you read this? Check that out first, will you?


BTW: I have pin-pointed the Matrox lock-up problems now. And found a
work-around. If you don't mind, I'll email you about this next week-end,
because I would like to have your advice.
