JWM> KJ> THEN, on the first day of spring, a big snow/sleet storm
JWM> KJ> hit, and we spent two days (actually 36 hours) with no
JWM> KJ> power--and no heat (in 5 degree weather). We couldn't
JWM> KJ> evacuate the birds, because every place I COULD have taken
JWM> KJ> 15 birds and a big dog was also without power and heat. So
JWM> KJ> we had to stay here and try to keep'em warm.
JWM> KJ> Fortunately our gas stove still worked. We baked things
JWM> KJ> constantly to keep the house as warm as we could. I know,
JWM> KJ> bad bird mommy, carbon monoxide danger and all that -- we
JWM>Kathy,
JWM>Saw this and thought I'd pass on some info that I discovered. Like you
a
JWM>probably most everyone else) I would have faced the same problem if the
JWM>electricity went off for an extended period of time during the winter.
u
JWM>have discovered that there is a possible alternative to the problem.
her
JWM>are now on the market a new type of add-on gas fireplaces (natural gas
nd
JWM>propane) that burn with such high efficiency (greater than 99%) that they
JWM>not even need to be vented to the outside. I've checked around here and

JWM>sell for between $300-500, depending on how fancy an installation you
ant
JWM>(free standing-built in-flat to the wall or corner with nice mantles,
tc.
JWM>One would be enough to heat a decent sized room and help avoid the danger
JWM>anyone freezing to death. I'm seriously considering it for here. This
a
JWM>winter brought us a couple severe ice storms that took out some people's
JWM>electricity for 5 to as much as 10 days(!).
I have seen these and they are nice. I've been wanting one bad. I love a
fireplace in the winter to cheer things up. I used to have one, never
used the regular heat and burned everything that was burnable. Less
garbage to tote out. The Damark catalog company, that has an 800 number,
sells these, and the mantles too. You can get one and a nice oak mantle
for about $400.
This catalog is a must for computer and bird people. They sell nice
dollies that fold up to move things like cages and feed bags. They sell
power inverters so that you can carry your babies in the car with you if
you have to or warm them in the car with a power outage. They have a
nice one that I am gonna order soon that is $69 that will handle 500
watts peak (very short startup duration) and 300 watts continuous. A
large brooder, like On the Birdwalks or Thief of Hearts is about 120 w.
A laptop like mine is about 15 or 25 w. A heating pad is 53 w.
They also sell generators. Here ya go, all you snowbirds! A 2800 w
generator for $299. Factory warranties are available on many items.
Some items have been factory re-conditioned and work perfectly and
warranties are offered. My friend bought her HP 500C printer from them
for $200 plus shipping. The next year they sold the HP 600C for $300.
She bought that, sold the 500C for the original $200 and only had to pay
another 100 for a much better printer! Works like a charm.
Thought I'd let everyone know about the generators especially.
