Hello Tom -

JB>>> You should be able to get a kit from the dealer or a brake
JB>>> specialist containing only the rubber bits for your
JB>>> brakes.

->> I would have thought so too, but these days the pricing it
->> such that it's easier/cheaper to just replace the whole
->> caliper, master cylinder, or whatever. Same thing with
->> wheel cylinders...

TW> When compairing the Price of a Rebuilt assemble and having
TW> yuor assemble rebuilt that is true. BUT if one can do the
TW> Rebuild yuor self the price of the Rebuild Kit(IF
TW> avaialble) is the Winner every time. I have never done a
TW> Disk Caliper myself but the old Wheel Cylinders and Master
TW> Cylinders were almost a "No Brainer".

Technically those were supposed to be honed using a special
tool with three honing stones attached and only a certain
number of 'passes' in/out of the cylinder to clean up the bore
or the cylinder was to be considered 'junk' and not used again.

Oddly enough while waiting to pull out onto a six lane highway
my brake pedal went almost to the floor with no warning. One
minute the brakes were OK, the next only the back brakes would
work.

When I got home I checked the fluid and it was low in one
chamber. Added more and when the pedal wouldn't come back up
looked under the car to find brake fluid dripping from the
passenger side front tire. Apparently a brake line popped just
as I stopped to check traffic before pulling out.

If I had pulled out onto that highway I would've rearended
someone at the first red light we came to since I had no idea
the brakes would fail.

With my bad knee and two bad shoulders I'm not sure I can do
another complete brake job anymore. If this line has burst the
others need replacing too and it's not unusual for them to snap
off at the cylinder/caliper requiring that everything be
disassembled and at that point may as well do a complete brake
job. I've had to do this on my last two cars now this one. Did
the other two myself but it's been some years and I'm not
having an easy time of it squatting and working on rusted bolts
if you know what I mean.

Last quote I got was $600 for parts and labor about 8 years ago
and did that one myself for $300. This one will be more but I
don't know how much more. It's an old Lincoln. :-\
