| subject: | 56k modem, apology |
OK Jim now that I've examined the new modem documentation listed at a site under the search for "Akita" "SCM001369-04 I've learned a few things. First off I was wrong and the model460.zip file you sent along whuch did indeed contain the V.90 flash. The lack was in my not knowing to move the jumper marked select. Once I did that the modem promptly flashed to V.90. Heck previously I had not even been able to make out the marking "SEL." Now the modem shows in DOS 5.0 diagnostics and MSD. I've not yet got it going but I'm sure that's due to my not having the luxury of examining it in detail just now or properly setting up the dialer. Unexpected things to do tomorrow and I can't afford the effort just now as the computer lies in a difficult to work on place. Once I swap everything out to the other case I can install Win 95 on physical disk one, Linux on physical disk 2, install the CD-ROM and sound card then the computer will be moved to a convenient location where I can actually use it. Or I may just set it back to PnP and use it in the H.P. after removing the ethernet card. Since I see two jumpers marked 0 and 1 under COM I presume these stand for the binary equivelent of the COM port one desires. Amazing what you can do when you've got the right model number to search for documentation. Once more I remained cautious until I knew what I was doing then I get brave. Fewer dead cards lying about that way. You were right on all points it was merely my poor eyesight and not having the number listed in the first sentence to assure me as to what I was doing. There really was no jumper setting or other than PnP info in the file modem260.zip you sent. Aside to Mike Ross you were also helpful in giving me the confidence to move forward and it didn't hurt my eyes weren't tired this go round. I'm set in my ways and do not proceed until I know what I'm doing Jim and you've hands on experience with these modems, I did not. It's a real hardware 56K modem with genuine onboard UART and moving that select jumper revealed all. So Jim you have my public apology and gratitude. All was just as you represented. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: FONiX Info Systems * Berkshire UK * www.fonix.org (2:252/171) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 252/171 140/1 106/2000 633/267 |
