Hello Tom -

->> Technically those were supposed to be honed using a special
->> tool with three honing stones attached and only a certain
->> number of 'passes' in/out of the cylinder to clean up the
->> bore or the cylinder was to be considered 'junk' and not
->> used again.

TW> I had one of those wheel Cylinder Hones I gotroorm J C
TW> Whitney. They had pretty fine stones so were fro clean up
TW> only. After honing you should examing them carefully for
TW> any pitting. That was Difficult in place!! :-) :-)

"J.C. Whitney" - there is a name I've not run across in a few
decades!

I remember making up lists of items I wanted to buy for my
flathead V8 in my '52 Ford convertible. Gee I'm glad I never
had the money. It would've been a disaster if I'd started
taking that thing apart.

->> With my bad knee and two bad shoulders I'm not sure I can
->> do another complete brake job anymore. If this line has
->> burst the others need replacing too and it's not unusual
->> for them to snap off at the cylinder/caliper requiring that
->> everything be disassembled and at that point may as well do
->> a complete brake job. I've had to do this on my last two
->> cars now this one. Did the other two myself but it's been
->> some years and I'm not having an easy time of it squatting
->> and working on rusted bolts if you know what I mean.

TW> I KNOW exacticaly what you mean. After doing most of my own
TW> work for over 45 Years I finaly cannot do it any more. I
TW> almsot Cry everytine I have to take a vehicle into a shop.
TW> But Reality has set in and I have no other choice.

I might have the oomph to do one more complete replacement of
my brakes but knowing how slow I will be and the pain
discourages me quite a bit right now.

TW> I guess I should be gratefull for the countless Thousands
TW> of dollars I had saved in the past by doing my own Auto
TW> Repairs.

I learned too much really. I noticed long ago that friends who
had no idea what those 'odd noises' were their cars were making
spent about 1/5th the money on their cars and we junked our
cars about the same time. I just spent more time over, under,
and around my cars anticipating failures and replacing parts
_before_ they failed.

My cars always ran better, were faster, and looked better but
in the end at a high cost in both time and money spent.

TW> I have changes my selection specifications for buying a car
TW> though. The last New car I bought was a 1960 Ford Falcon.

Bought one of those Falcon's with the four bolt 15 inch wheels
for $20 to drive while friends tried to locate a new
transmission for my Pontiac. Couldn't leave it alone though and
after tweaking and adding a hidden functional 'ram air' scoop
(prior to the GTO having this) I blew the engine cruising at
100mph on the X-way. This car stock topped out at 70mph. ;-)

TW> For many years when I was doing my own maintenance I bought
TW> 10 to 15 Year old cars. Later I shifted to buying off the
TW> Consumer Reports "Worst Used Car Buy" list. Got many
TW> bargans and Cheap Transportation vehicles.

I used to recommend buying the less popular cars to young
people but I realized that this only works if you can do your
own repairs.

TW> I am buying Newer and lower miledge cars now and use the
TW> Best Buy list. The newest of my fleet of threee cars is a
TW> 1999 Subaru and the oldest is a 1993.

My Lincoln is an '86 that I have grown fond of, unfortunately,
and don't want to get rid of it just yet. I get attached to
vehicles and pets. :-\
