On 4/9/97, George Erdner grokked "Prog. Rock defns.", and said to Scott R.
Godin:
GE> Actually, I'm interested in discussing the choices artists make
GE> regarding instrumentation. Why do some artists choose a mellotron or
GE> synthesiser and others use actual musicians playing real orchestral
GE> instruments? Does the synthetic quality of a mellotron add or detract
GE> from a composition, as compared to using a live string ensemble?
Interesting question. Not being able to afford a personal string ensemble
myself, I much prefer to avail myself of the vast tonal pallettes present in
todays synthesizers and samplers. =8)
If I needed strings, and could afford an ensemble, you can bet your bippy
that I would prefer the real thing. One only has to listen to some early
Larry Carlton solo albums to hear how much of a difference it makes in the
arrangements.
SRG> Have you heard the Great Deceiver Box set yet? If not it is a
SRG> definite mu have for Crimso fans. Some incredible live moments.
GE> No, I have not heard it yet. I am reluctant to fork over cash for
GE> something I haven't heard, so until I hear someone else's copy, I
GE> don't plan to buy my own.
SRG> THAT is what this echo is for.
GE> How does one actually HEAR something in this echo?
LOL!! No, I don't mean that.. I mean in that when you have talked with
someone enough whose opinions you generally tend to grow to value regarding
some of the music you listen to in common, you become more willing to 'take a
chance' on some new stuff. I would NEVER have found Ozric Tentacles if it
weren't for this group. (THANKS GUYS! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!)
[snip]
GE> Unfortunately, there hasn't been too much good music produced by
GE> artists who've been in seclusion for a decade.
GE>
SRG> Donald Fagen.
SRG>
GE> I wouldn't consider one artist as being "a lot" of comeback artists
GE> with good material.
well it was just an example =8)
SRG> By the way, whatever you are using for quoting software is severely
SRG> affec the quoted material by removing large chunks of text.
GE> My software doesn't edit quotes, I do. Given my tendency to honor FIDO
GE> policies regarding message content in a somewhat "loose" manner, I
GE> feel obligated to compensate by paying strict attention to the quoting
GE> guidelines. It's a feeble attempt to bring balance to the cosmos and
GE> to maintain a relatively clean kharma.
True, but it should still "wrap around" before quoting the next line. Imagine
the comfusion of someone reading a reply you made to someone's post wherein
the quoted phrase had the destinctive modifier "not" truncated out... =8)
