SRG> SRG> Sooooo where did you get the idea that we ONLY wanted to talk
bou
SRG> SRG> the m and not the people who MAKE the music?
SRG> GE> I thought it best to limit my comments to talking about
SRG> GE> MUSIC, not fan club issues. If I wanted to talk about fan club
tuf
SRG> GE> I'd go to the Tiger Beat echo.
SRG> Well as long as we are now separating the MUSIC from the MUSICIANS why
o
SRG> also just separate them from their INSTRUMENTS and talk about them too?
Actually, I'm interested in discussing the choices artists make
regarding instrumentation. Why do some artists choose a mellotron or
synthesiser and others use actual musicians playing real orchestral
instruments? Does the synthetic quality of a mellotron add or detract
from a composition, as compared to using a live string ensemble?
SRG> SRG> Have you heard the Great Deceiver Box set yet? If not it is a
SRG> SRG> definite mu have for Crimso fans. Some incredible live moments.
SRG> SRG>
SRG> GE> No, I have not heard it yet. I am reluctant to fork over cash for
SRG> GE> something I haven't heard, so until I hear someone else's copy, I
SRG> GE> don't plan to buy my own.
SRG> THAT is what this echo is for.
How does one actually HEAR something in this echo?
SRG> MD> Are you going to go see the reformed Yes on tour this summer?
SRG> GE> No.
SRG> SRG> WHY NOT?
SRG> GE> Because they aren't scheduled to appear at a venue that is within
SRG> GE> close geographic proximity to where I am.
SRG> I wouldn't
SRG> expect you'd take time out from your busy schedule to go watch them eat
SRG> biscuits at a local diner.
If they were at a local diner, then the odds are that it would be
because they were also playing at a venue that was close enough that I
could attend their concert. I like Yes, but not enough to make a two-day
pilgramage to a distant location to hear them.
SRG> GE> too many live concerts of Prog-Rock artists to get real enthused

SRG> Gentle Giant Live. Magma Live. King Crimson live. Music is a performance
SRG> THese three bands IMHO have some of the most impressive live music
ecord
SRG> especially when you consider the difficulty of pulling off some of this

SRG> in a live situation. I heard snatches of _Live Hhai_ off of a tape
ampli
SRG> someone sent me and LOVED it. THEN I heard the cheering at the end and
e
SRG> it was _LIVE_... I became impressed.
I have also heard many good live recordings. There are some venues with
good enough accoustics that an excellent recording can be made.
Unfortunately, those few of those venues are close enough to where I
live to take advantage of that opportunity. In Pittsburgh, Heinz Hall
and the Benedum Center (formerly the Stanley Theatre) have outstanding
accoustics. So did the Syria Mosque, unitl it was torn down to build a
parking lot. But few rock and roll acts of any genre appear in those
venues any more. Instead they play at one of three outdoor
amphitheatres, and all of them are better suited to three-chord head
bangers than real musicians.
SRG> SRG> SO what's to stop them from re-forming? There have been plenty of
SRG> SRG> artists have come out of seclusion in the last 10 years to
roduce
SRG> SRG> another album.
SRG> SRG>
SRG> GE> Unfortunately, there hasn't been too much good music produced by
SRG> GE> artists who've been in seclusion for a decade.
SRG> Donald Fagen.
I wouldn't consider one artist as being "a lot" of comeback artists with
good material.
SRG> By the way, whatever you are using for quoting software is severely
ffec
SRG> the quoted material by removing large chunks of text.
My software doesn't edit quotes, I do. Given my tendency to honor FIDO
policies regarding message content in a somewhat "loose" manner, I feel
obligated to compensate by paying strict attention to the quoting
guidelines. It's a feeble attempt to bring balance to the cosmos and to
maintain a relatively clean kharma.
