Interesting ... I must confess that I am somewhat confused on this point. I
am also irritated that I haven't noticed any decent documentation. I would
like to find something on just how the second DNS server is used.

I will have to research what you are saying. I just tried a Netmon capture
of two lookups of nonexistent hosts - one host in a domain for which the
DNS server was authoritative, and one that was not.

Both DNS responses were "nonexistent", and they both included an
"authority" section. In the first response, the SOA of the
queried DNS server was given (it was authoritative). In the second, the SOA
of the DNS server for the other domain was given.

The client would have to apply a fair bit of intelligence to work out the
difference between these two responses...
